Trips with Gig Harbor Friends and other memories of Junior High

The kids in these two videos were childhood friends that swung through Seattle for a couple years and then moved down around Tacoma and Gig Harbour. The video was from a trip we took to nearby Dockton Park. All my memories of Tacoma were mostly people picking fun at it. The city really stunk driving past so it earned the Nickname “The Tacoma Aroma.” Apparently there was gang violence at the time close to where they lived. I remember helping one of the boys in the video with his paper route and one of the homes had I sign on it “All trespassers will be shot.” Of course he wanted me to deliver to that house! That is the kind of stuff I wish we had recorded on video.

I think this video is one of the funniest clips in my collection despite my brother telling us it would be a very boring! The kids were just standing around and too reluctant to jump after looking down at the water which was seemingly far below. It was shot at Dockton Park Marina on Muary Island close to Gig Harbor and Tacoma.

Things have vastly improved down there. I went to Tacoma during the Summer and it has turned into a pretty interesting little town. Now it’s Seattle that people criticize for having homeless problems or that developers want to keep tearing down much of its uniqueness to erect yet another apartment complex. I always thought of Seattle having ties to tech with Microsoft being just across the lake but I always thought of Seattle as being much more then just a tech town. Had our light rail system made it all the way down to Tacoma I would bet a lot more people would live down there. Right now it stops right between the two cities at SeaTac. Gig Harbour I don’t think has changed much at all. It was already nice at the time. When my brother said I was “getting my drug fix” at the beginning of the video he was referring to my being addicted to playing GameBoy. I don’t actually have a drug problem! I just thought that point might not have been clear from watching the video.

More Memories from Middle School

When I saw this local news report at my middle school about their mascot lots of memories from gym class came back. One day someone threw gum over those lockers and it landed in my hair. We needed to get it cut out since we couldn’t think of any way to take it out otherwise. I was mad about that at the time but it just feels like a funny experience now!

We also played tug of war. Once they put a boys group up against the girls group and the boys lost! There must be something about boys not developing until later where girls in general are physically stronger for a moment? I am pretty sure I read about that later as an adult.

In track the gym teacher once instructed everyone to run slowly around the course instead of trying to out run the other kids. When one student sped past everyone else because he didn’t understand the silly instructions both the teacher and students took glee in pointing it out to him afterwards. That just seems strange to me now and maybe it did then as well. Everyday you try to run faster then all the other students but then on this one particular day you do the exact opposite. Okay…

I remember the teacher kept getting mad at the kids who washed their fancy shoes off in the sink and left all the mud behind! But if they had the latest $100 plus shoes I could almost understand it. Who would pay that much and then have them covered in mud all day?
